Why tiling decides the bathroom

Tiling is the layer you'll see for the next ten years.

The bathroom you remember is the one with the tile work that's right: grout lines that meet at the corners, cuts that respect the room geometry, a feature wall that lines up with the basin, a niche framed properly. The bathroom that disappoints is almost always one with bad tile work — even if every other component is premium.

Build Masters Group Ltd treats tiling as the visible layer of the bathroom. The substrate, primer, waterproofing, layout planning, cut control and grout sealing are all part of one tiling discipline — not a stage that gets rushed at the end.

How we plan a bathroom tile job in London

  • Substrate & level check — walls and floors levelled or boarded as needed before the first tile is dry-laid.
  • Dry-lay & cut plan — the room is set out tile by tile to decide where the cuts fall, which sides take the smallest cuts, where the focal lines sit.
  • Adhesive & bond — adhesive choice matched to tile (porcelain, ceramic, natural stone), with appropriate notch size and bedding.
  • Grout line discipline — consistent spacing, level grout, colour matched to spec.
  • Niche & trim detail — recessed niches mitred or trimmed, decorative profiles installed where the design needs them.
  • Grout, seal & silicone — sealed grout, neat silicone work at every change of plane, no smudges and no bridged joints.

Large-format porcelain, mosaic & natural stone

Bathroom tile choices in London have moved towards larger-format porcelain (60×120 and beyond) and re-discovered mosaic for feature zones. Both require different prep — large format needs near-flat substrate and full bedding to avoid lippage; mosaic needs a perfectly flat base or it telegraphs every imperfection. Both are part of our regular work.

Tiling & waterproofing as one system

Tiling on top of failed waterproofing is the most common cause of bathroom leaks we see. Every shower or wetroom we tile is waterproofed and tanked first — then tiled. The two stages are treated as one system, not two trades.

FAQ · Bathroom tiling London

Bathroom tiling questions, answered.

Do you tile both walls and floors?

Yes — bathroom tiling almost always involves both. We plan the layout so wall and floor grout lines either intentionally align or intentionally don't, depending on tile size, room geometry and the look the client wants.

Do you work with large-format porcelain and natural stone?

Yes. Large-format porcelain (e.g. 60×60, 60×120, 120×120) and natural stone tiles require careful substrate prep, levelling and the right adhesive — all of which are part of how we plan a bathroom tiling job in London.

Can you do mosaic feature walls and niches?

Yes. Mosaic strips, full feature walls, recessed shower niches with mitred edges and decorative trim work are part of our regular bathroom tiling work.

Do you handle waterproofing before tiling?

Yes — tanking and waterproofing of wet zones is completed before any tile is laid. Tiling on top of failed waterproofing causes leaks; we treat them as a single system.

Which areas of London do you cover for tiling?

We work across London including Islington, Angel, Hackney, Shoreditch, Camden, Clerkenwell and the wider North and Central London areas.
